It is easy done to misplace a file and it can be frustrating when you know the file is there but you just can't remember where you put it. Follow the simple tutorial below to learn how to find those misplaced files.

First click on START then hover the mouse over find and then click on Files/Folders, this will open the find files/folders dialogue box.

Now you have to select where you want Windows 98 to look, if it is a file on a CD or floppy then insert it at this stage. If you are looking on a CD or Floppy then select the respective drive letter from the pull down box, for the benefit of this example we are going to select C: (the hard drive).

Also note the Include Subfolders check-box, this will search all folders within the specified drive (recommended).

Next enter the name of the file you are looking for, if you don't know the name of the file you can use wildcards, the wildcard parameter is the multiplication symbol *, this can substitute the filename, file extension or both, it can also substitute part of the filename, for example say you knew the file was a Microsoft Word document you could use *.doc as .doc is the file extension that Word uses (for more on file extensions click-here).

If you are not sure of the name but you know any of the text that the file contains you can enter the text into the box provided (containing text) and click find now

For the sake of this tutorial we are going to presume that the file we have lost is called example.doc so this is what we have entered into the search box in fig 1.2 above.

When you have entered your search criteria, simply click on find now. If the file is found it will be displayed in the box underneath along with its location, you can either double click (left button) on the file and it will open, or make a note of the location of the file and find it manually thorough Windows Explorer or My Computer.
