WI-FI - Wireless Fidelity 802.11a, 802.11b and 802.11g
WI-FI refers to a type of wireless technology which allows users to connect to a local network without the need for cables, also known as a WLAN (Wireless Local Area Network).

WI-FI (Wireless Fidelity) specifically refers to the 802.11 standard, including 802.11a, 802.11b and 802.11g Wireless specifications.
- 802.11a provides data transfer up to 54Mbps operating at 5GHz
- 802.11b provides data transfer up to 11Mbps operating at 2.4GHz
- 802.11g provides data transfer up to 54Mbps operating at 2.4GHz
Wireless access points (called WI-FI Hotspots) are popping up all over the place, common locations include airports, hotels, coffee shops, train stations and libraries.
WI-FI certified products have been passed by the WI-FI Alliance as compatible with other 802.11 based wireless products.

Most modern laptops/notebooks come with some type of wireless card integrated, allowing users on the move to connect to any available networks.
Broadband Internet service providers are also starting to supply wireless routers as part of their packages. This allows home users to purchase integrated or USB wireless adaptors for their PCs, and then connect to the internet without having to worry about messy cables.
