The interface (port) a mouse uses to connect to your computer may also vary, depending on the age of the system, the age of the mouse, or other factor. The 2 most common interface types are:
  • Serial Mouse - This is a mouse with a serial connector, it requires a free serial port on your PC. These are usually the corded-type of mouse (see below) and receive their operating power from the serial port.
  • USB Mouse - This type of mouse has a USB connector and requires a free USB port. They can either be corded or cordless (see below).

Common mouse types include:

  • Corded Mouse - A corded mouse connects directly to the computer via a cable (serial or USB). It gets its power from whatever port it is connected to, which means no batteries required!
  • Cordless Mouse - A cordless mouse (as the name suggests) has no cable, this type of mouse utilises batteries for its power supply.
  • Mechanical Mouse - A mechanical mouse uses a system of a ball and several rollers to track its movement. They do, however, tend to get dust and debris into the mechanics and may require regular cleaning.
  • Optical Mouse - An optical mouse utilises optical electronics to track the mouse's position and movement. They are preferred over standard mechanical mice as they tend to be more reliable and require less maintenance.
Whichever type of mouse you buy ensure it is compatible with your PC, and that you have the free interface port available.
